A Pioneering Spirit
The Cambay
Group, as currently incorporated, was formed in 1990 when Cambay’s parent
company, Somerston reorganized the US group structure. However, the group has
been active in the California market since 1983 through various entities
previously managed by Chapman & Wilson Inc.
Somerston can proudly trace
its roots back to 1854 when the company's founding father, Mr. Ralph Chapman,
first went into business as a ships-husband. The Somerston Group of companies
have been in continuous existence since 1856 as a privately held investment
entity. From 1860 onwards, the company operated a long line of first clipper
ships then steam ships and later tramp cargo ships until 1968, when the company
started diversifying into real estate and other interests.
By 1976, the last of the
shipping interests had been sold. The only tangible memory of the shipping
heritage remains as the collection of memorabilia in various museums and the
company logo which comes from the cap badges worn by the ship’s Captains
depicting the distinctive red and white house flag.
